A car-theft gang was arrested in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, after exchanging gunfire with police early Monday, Guangzhou Daily reported.
One police officer was injured in the chest after he was hit by a car containing two of the four suspects. All four were wounded in escape attempts and treated in a local hospital, police said.
Plainclothes policemen thought the gang was suspicious and began to follow them Sunday night. After gang members parked in a neighborhood near Zhongshan Road, two men tried to steal a Jeep.
Just as they were about to drive away, policemen rushed out. The two men abandoned the Jeep, ran and fired at policemen. After firing warning shots into the air, the officers shot the two armed robbers in the leg and apprehended them.
Meanwhile, another group of officers closed in on the gang’s car and ordered the other two men to get out. But they suddenly started the car, bumped into an officer and drove away.
In the ensuing car chase, the fugitives’ car hit a tree. They were caught soon after.
