Railways, the most popular transportation in China, are expected to carry 235 million passengers during the 40-day Chinese New Year travel rush that begins Jan. 8, as people travel home for family reunions.
For the first time, a real-name train ticket system that require passengers to buy tickets with valid IDs will be implemented nationwide starting Jan. 1 to crack down ticket touts.
A valid ID card permits the purchase of one ticket per route on any date, but a maximum of five tickets can be purchased if the buyer possesses the valid ID cards of five individuals, according to the Ministry of Railways. Foreigners can present valid passports.
Passengers can buy tickets for others, but the original ID card is needed.
