The 24
The University of York
CHINA TOUR

The Department of Music at the University of York is one of the most highly regarded music departments in the United Kingdom, with a fuller schedule of performance activities than any other university department .The range of study, performance and composition is extremely wide. Both within undergraduate courses and at research level. The teaching and research staff at York include distinguished scholars, composers and pertormers, and the department attracts high quality students from all over the world.

The 24 continues a long tradition of innovation in vocal ensembles at the University of York, bringing together two previous ensembles, YorVox and the York Vocal Index. Repertoire for The 24 is drawn from works for small ensemble or for one—pre—part singing. It ranges across all historical periods but focuses especially on new or rarely performed works.

In 2009 members of The 24 toured Germany in a partnership with the ensemble Cantiamo, performing in churches and on German radio. That same year, conducted by Zhu Buxi, The 24 gave a concert of Chinese vocal music as part of the University of York Music Society's lunchtime concert series.

The 24 and related ensembles have appeared on two CDs released by the group Red Byrd(Magister Leoninus: Sacred Music from 12th Century Paris 1 &2 Hyperion CDA 66944 &CDA 67289) and in 2002 recorded the world premiere of Larry Polansky's Doggerel(Cold Blue CD Cb0011).

In 2011-12, The 24 will be the resident musicians with Leeds experimental theatre group Slung Low, performing the music for five site-specific productions throughout Yorkshire. It will also collaborate with Serbian musicians in concerts in London and York and will give a series of outreach performances in Yorkshire venues, including an evensong service at York Minster.

In the spring of both 2010 and 2011, The 24 toured China under the direction of the eminent conductor Zhu Bu Xi, singing in all nearly twenty concerts in fifteen cities. In March and April 2012, The 24 returns to China for a third tour that will take them to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and other major venues.

Conductor-William Brooks

Before coming to York, William Brooks directed the University of lllinois Contemporary Chamber Singers for twelve years.
